Cultural Practices
The Cultural Practices NGO is a non-profit organisation founded by Kateryna Semenyuk and Oksana Dovgopolova in 2017 that has been focused on collective memory and visual art. The main project implemented by the NGO is the memory culture platform Past / Future / Art. As part of this project, the NGO implements commemorative, research, and artistic projects, as well as a discussion programme to engage a wide audience into the working through the past. Since 24 February 2022, we are focusing on working with the trauma of the Russia-Ukraine war.
As the main project by the applicant NGO Cultural Practices, the memory culture platform Past / Future / Art has a vast experience in organising national and international exhibitions and public discussions focused on collective memory using instruments of visual art.
- In 2021, with the support of the Ukrainian Institute, an art & science exhibition dedicated to the memory of Babyn Yar tragedy was organised at LAZNIA Centre for Contemporary Art in Gdańsk, Poland (https://pastfutureart.org/en/trees-of-memory) with the public program in partnership with Ars Electronica festival.
- Since 2021, the Past / Future / Art has been cooperating with the Odesa National Fine Arts Museum on an ongoing basis, starting from the exhibition on the theme of the Holodomor (https://pastfutureart.org/en/i-still-feel-sorry). 3 exhibitions of contemporary artists are planned for 2024.
- Since 24 February 2022, we are working with the trauma of the Russia-Ukraine war. In 2022, with the support of the British Council, we held a laboratory for artistic research on the experiences of war, Land to Return, Land to Care (https://www.landtoreturn.com.ua/en/land-to-return-land-to-care.html).
- In 2023, we held exhibitions at the Kunstmuseum Stuttgart, Germany (https://pastfutureart.org/from-1914-till-ukraine) and at the Kazerne Dossin Memorial Museum, Belgium (https://pastfutureart.org/en/ground-shadows), as well as co-organised a large-scale art project in Kyiv, “How Are You?
