EcoPassenger Ennvironmental Comparison Tool

A free journey-comparison calculator developed by the International Railways Union (UIC), together with the Sustainable Development Foundation, the German Institute for Environment and Energy (ifeu), and HaCon.

For any given route and date, it compares train, car, and plane options side by side, calculating energy consumption, CO₂ emissions, and other atmospheric pollutants for each mode. The methodology goes beyond simple fuel-burn figures: it includes the energy used to produce the electricity or fuel itself, and uses national (not global-average) train and routing data for greater accuracy in European context.

This makes it a directly practical companion to Green Mobility in Arts and Culture webinar's decision-making tool and its emphasis on choosing land-based over air travel — organisations or individual travellers can use EcoPassenger to generate a concrete, route-specific emissions comparison to support (or challenge) a travel decision, complementing the aviation-focused ICAO calculators in the library.
