Report on Fair International Cultural Cooperation #1 – Funding Parties

This short report documents a closed expert meeting organised by DutchCulture in Amsterdam in October 2018, which brought together forty funders, intermediaries, and cultural organisations from across Europe and beyond to continue the conversation started by Beyond Curiosity and Desire: Towards Fairer International Collaborations in the Arts — the IETM/On the Move/DutchCulture toolkit published earlier that year.

Where that toolkit focuses on the perspective of creative practitioners entering international collaborations, this meeting shifted the lens to the funding side: what responsibilities do funders and institutions carry, and what would it actually take to embed fairer practices in their programmes and ways of working? The two documents form a natural pair and are best read together in relation to Building Strong International Partnerships.

For participants in Building Strong International Partnerships, this report offers a candid account of how the inequality looks from the funder's side — including the admission that opportunistic, one-off approaches will not disappear and that co-design remains more aspiration than standard practice. At roughly ten pages, the report is concise and direct.
